Free Professional Help
Where to get help?
The ACT Gambling Counselling and Support Service (ACTGSS) is a free service offering confidential face-to-face, telephone and online counselling services for people concerned about their own, or a friend or family member’s gambling. Individual, relationship and financial counselling are available. For further information call Relationships Australia on 1800 858 858.
What does professional counselling involve?
Financial Counsellors can be consulted through the ACTGSS and can provide free information, support and advocacy to assist people in financial difficulty. The counsellors services are free, independent and confidential. A Financial Counsellor can help you understand your options so that you can get back on your feet. For more information call 1800 007 007 or visit www.carefcs.org.
Gambling Help Online provides free information and access to qualified gambling counsellors who can provide support either through live counselling or email. The service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and can be accessed anywhere from within Australia. People will have the option to seek assistance anonymously or to register with the service in order to keep a record of their discussions. There is good evidence that problem gamblers who receive assistance are better able to manage their addiction as a result . Often people do not know about professional services, or are too embarrassed to seek help or have the belief they can manage on their own, often underestimating their problem. This does not need to be the case. Commonly people also think that if they go for professional help they need to completely stop gambling, or that the service will be expensive, which is not the case. The professional services available for those experiencing gambling problems (and their friends and family) are free.
